During the Year... Richard was 18 years of age. He lived at home with his parents and siblings and continued his studies at McGill University. During the school semester he lived in Montreal, Quebec and he travelled back home on his breaks. He had more responsibility and helped his father with the books and chores. The family ‘factory’ burned down in April which resulting in great loss, and sadly, his Mother died in September. He also socialized more exclusively with his future wife Mina Calcutt than he did in previous years, and frequently wrote to her while he was away at school. He continued his close friendship with Mr. & Mrs. Grant who also lived in Montreal.

Then went calling at 1 with George, Mr. Meade. Harry Campbell with the team went out to Wallis’ then came back & had dinner. Went out again till 6:30. Went to Hatton's to a party, very good. Jan. 2d Saturday: Very tired. Went up to Calcutts at 10 & went for some bushes for them. After dinner. Went up to Maria’s then up to Calcutts & helped them to write some invitations for their party. Very tired after. Did not go out. Jan. 3d Sunday: Went to church. Went to Sunday school walked home with Mina Calcutt. Went up to Maria’s & stayed to tea. Walked over to church with Addy. Mina, Helen & sat in Calcutt’s pew. After went up to Calcutt’s. Jan. 4th Monday: [Note: on the reverse of this page RBR has written: ‘2. Went up to say good bye to the Snyders and drove Sarah, Mina, Harry Campbell over town & drove Mrs. Snyder around town. Then went to the train. Sarah, Mina, Addy came over to the train. Minnie, Harry C & I went down to train. Going up to Toronto for my preliminary examination for P.L. Surveyor. Got up at 11:30. Went up & stayed with Harry Campbell. Jan. 5th Tuesday: Went down to the government building (Harry Campbell came down with me) for my exam, had lunch at a restaurant & went back till 5. Came back, did not go out but Harry went out to a party. I was too tired. Jan. 6th Wednesday: Went down till 5. After tea Harry & a fellow named Nickolson went to the opera. Very good. Jan. 7th Thursday: Went down did a little at exam. Went home with Vankoughnet & Worrell. Jan. 8th Friday: Did not go down till 4. Went through Osgoode Hall & the University, in the evening went to the opera. Jan. 9 Saturday: Went up for my oral exam from 10 till 12. Passed my exam. Went back to Campbells. Called on Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. C.J. Campbell. Went for a walk up to Miss Stubb’s & Miss Dupont’s school. Did not go out in evening. Jan. 10 Sunday: Went down with Harry to the Cathedral in afternoon called for Kresleman & we went for a walk, did not go out in evening. Jan. 11 Monday: Went down in a cab to the 6:50 train. Met some school boys going down. Got in Port Hope at 9:30. Went up & saw Winnie. Went out to Peterborough, they were very much surprised to see me. After dinner went up to Snyders & Maria’s. Went up to Jame’s house. Went over with Eddie’s trunk. Then George & I drove him over & we just got there as the train was leaving, had not time to get his trunk. In the evening went up to a party at the Snyders, very good. Jan. 12 Tuesday: Calcutt’s were going to have a very large party but Mina is sick in bed so they post-poned it. Very bussy making a hammock chair all morning. Papa & Mama started for Cobourg for James wedding tomorrow. Charlie & Charlotte also started with Papa & Mama for home. Went up to Calcutts saw Addy for about an hour (Mina very sick.) Went up to the Snyders & Maria’s. Sarah & Katie drove me up to Jame’s to see Maria & Sophia to say good bye. Then over to town for while & down to train. Pollite brought my trunk &c over. Started for Montreal. Eddie at PH went up & had tea at Mr. Ward’s till 9:30. Went on 9. TR. [Note: RBR has written two entries for January 13] Jan. 13: James Z Rogers married Maggie Burnet at Cobourg at 3 o’clock p.m. & drove home. [Note: Entered at the top of the page and dated Jan.uary 13.] Jan. 13 Wednesday: Conductor made me pay from Kingston to Montreal. Got on about 10:30. Drove up in a cab. Went up to see Dr. Dawson. Saw in paper that I was plucked in four subjects. After dinner went to College again for while. Came home had a sleep. Studdied. After tea went down to see Willie Maclennan as he had left here. Was not in. Studdied till 10:30. Went to bed. Jan. 14 Thursday: Went up to college at 10. till 12. Went over to Read’s room. Came back had lunch at C from 2 till 4:30. Looking at a bording house. Went down town with Read. After tea wrote a letter to Papa went to bed at 10. Jan. 15 Friday: Went to C at 10 till 11. & at 2 till 4:30. Wrote a letter to Papa. Went down town. After tea Willie Maclennan came up to my room and stayed till 10:45. Jan. 16th Saturday: Studdied all morning and after dinner went down to Willie Maclennan’s room and we went for a walk out st. Antoine St. Went to tea at Mr. Grant’s got home at 10. Studdied for while. Thornton sleeping up here. Jan. 17th Sunday: Had a bath. Went to the cathedral went to dinner with Tommy Badgley and in afternoon went to the cathedral to service. After tea we went to St. John’s. Came home read till 10. Jan. 18th Monday: Went to college at 10:30. Prof. Johnson not there as child dead. Went to C from 2 till 4:30 & went to gymnasium after tea went down to Willie Maclennan’s room & we went down town & he came up here. Jan. 19th Tuesday: Went to C at 10 till 12. Came back wrote a letter to C Ingles. Went to C from 2 till 5:30. Came home after tea went down to see Mr. Maclennan & engaged a room down there for myself. Came home studdied till 11. Jan. 20 Wednesday: Went to C from 9 till 12. Got letter from Papa. Went to C in afternoon & to gymnasium. Had tea packed up. Came down to Mrs. Tuff’s to board. Studdied till 12. Jan. 30th Saturday: Studdied all morning after dinner. Went up to c for letters. Called on Mrs. Hutchison and went to tea at Mr. Grant’s. Jan. 31st Sunday: Went up to the tailor’s to get my trousers. Feb. 3d Wednesday: Went to c from 9 to 10. Went down town along the dock after dinner went to c from 2 till 4:45. Went down to tea at Mrs. Grants’ till 9 came home not very well studdied till 10. Feb. 4th Thursday: (Last night we went up to Victoria St. hearing the fire alarm & found that Hazzazzor’s dancing room roof had fallen in but no one killed.) Went to c at 11 till 12 & from 2 till 4:30 (Was going over to St. Lamberts with Mrs. Grant but she could not go.) After C looked at some boarding houses & came home studdied till 11. Feb. 5th Friday: Went to c from 10 to 11. Looked at some boarding houses. Had dinner went to c from 2 till 4:30. Then to gymnasium at dinner time Willie & I went to look at a boarding house on Balmoral St. after tea. Went up to Balmoral St. and decided to go there. Studdied till 11:30. Went in to see Ross. Feb. 6th Saturday: Studdied till 11. Went up to see [P-----] went down town. Ross & I came home after dinner . Went up to [P-----’s] room & at 4 went went [sic] down and I had my first Turkish Bath till 6. After tea went over the mountain for a tramp to Roy’s hotel with a lot of college & other fellows. Had a good time. Got home at 12. Feb. 7th Sunday: Went to St. Georges to early communion at 9:30, came home. Went to the Cathedral saw Joe King. Went to the Badgley’s to dinner & tea. After dinner went to the cathedral at 4 when there was confirmation, did not go to church in the evening, came home at 9. Went in to the Jesuit Church for while, came home, wrote home. Feb. 8th Monday: Went to college at 11 till 1 came home had dinner fixed my chair went to c till 4:30 called at Mrs. Grants was not it. Went to gymnasium after tea. Went to lecture by Mr. Dawson (bookseller) very good. Feb. 9th Tuesday: Went to c from 10 to 12 got my nose frozen. Went to c from 2 till 5. Went down to tea with Mrs. Grant. Went to Temperance entertainment in Association Hall with Mrs. Grant & Mrs. Johnson. Walked home & went into Mrs. Grant’s for while got home at 11. Feb. 10th Wednesday: Went up to see Wilson to borrow some money. Went to St. George’s. Walked home with Mrs. Grant & went to dinner at four. Went & had a Turkish Bath till 6. After tea, packed up & came up [to] board with Mrs. Cuttler 9 Balmoral St. Went to hear Father Chinaguay lecture in Erskine Church. Feb. 11th: Went to C from 11 to 12. Went down to dinner at Mrs. Tuff’s for first time. Went to C from 2 till 4:30. Went down town with Wilson & went up with him & borrowed his dress coat. After tea went over to St. Lawrance Man & bought a Nectie (White). Went to a party at Mr. [McGowan] 983 St. Catherine. Enjoyed myself very much, got home at 2, walked home with Walker. Feb. 12th Friday: Got up at 9. Went to C till 11. Went to Reading Room till 12:15. Went to Reading Room till 12:15. Went to dinner & to C from 1 till 5, to gymnasium till 6 after tea. After went up to see Wilson was not in Went down town Willie & I had a Turkish bath from 4 till 6 after tea. Went up to Dr. Dawson’s to an ‘at-home’ of students. Very good. Feb. 14th Sunday: Went to St. George’s and to Sunday school in the afternoon. Went to tea at Mrs. Grant & to church. In the evening came home at 9:30 & wrote home. Feb. 15th Monday: Went to c from 10 to 1 & from 2 till 4:30 to gymnasium, after tea down stairs till 9. Feb. 16th Tuesday: Walked up to the gate with Mrs. Charles & to C from 10 to 12. Went to c from 1 till 4:45. Went down town met Mr. Westwood. After tea studdied till 10, went down stairs till 11. Feb. 17th Wednesday: Went to c from 9 till 11. Feb. 21st Sunday: Went to St. George’s in morning (storming very hard). Went to dinner with Mr. B Hutchison and to tea at Mrs. Grant’s to St. George’s in evening with them came home. Wrote home. Feb. 22d Monday: Walked up to Hamilton’s with Miss Charles, went to c from 10 till 11. First lecture from Prof Johnson for about a month. Went to c from 2 till 5. Went down town, met Frank Haultain. After tea studdied till 9:30. Walked home with Miss Charles, studdied for while. Feb. 23d Tuesday: Went to c from 10 till 1 & from 2 till 4. Called on Dr. Roddick, was not in. After tea went to church walked home with Mrs. Grant & Miss Easty. Met Miss Charles, Mrs. Cutler & Willie going home with Miss C went up with them. Got letter from Mama. Mar 18th Thursday: Went to c in morning went to dinner at Mrs. Grants and in afternoon Mrs. G & Mary & I walked over to St. Lambert’s to Mrs. Merriman’s & stayed to tea came home on train through bridge (1st time I had been though.) Got home at 11. Wrote a letter to Eddie. Mar 19 Friday: Went to c as usual. Went down town for dinner after 5 went down town. After tea went to St. George’s to church. Studdied. Mar 20th Saturday: Stayed all morning. Went down town for dinner & to freight shed with Willie. Then took Miss Charles Mrs. Cutler & a Mrs. Cortes through the library and museum after tea went to a party at Mrs. McGibbon’s. Very nice got home at 11:15 pm. Mar 21st Sunday: Went to the cathedral went to dinner & tea with Judge Badgley in evening went to St. Martin’s then came home. Went to Jesuits for a while then walked over home with Miss Shannon & Miss Charles. Wrote home. Mar 22d Monday: Went to C as usual after tea stayed in & studied till 11:00. Worked at c till 6 pm. Mar 23d Tuesday: Went to C as usual had Lunch at Joice’s. After C went down town & read papers after met Mrs. Nesbit Hirchoffer at street. After tea went to hear the [Beethoven] Quintette Club with Willie. It was magnificent. Mar 24th Wednesday: Went to c as usual. Had lunch at Joice’s. Went to Mr. Grant’s to tea Miss Merriman was there. Stayed till 10:15. Came home chatted till 12 o’clock. Mar 25th: Went to c as usual. At 4 went down town called on Mrs. Hutchison. At 9:30 Started for home. Willie & Isaac Dickson were down at the train to see me off. Had a very good journey. Mar 26th: Arrived in Port Hope at 9. Eddie there to meet me. Went up to school & they persuaded me to stay till afternoon after dinner. Went & saw Win & Mrs. Ward. Started for home at 3:30. Got in at 6. Went to church with George & Helen. [Note: the words ‘Good Friday’ have been written and underlined next to this entry] Mar 27th Saturday: Went over to Post office. Came back bumed around town with Sophia, Maria and Aunt Caroline. After dinner went up to see Addy Mina & then after tea took A. & M Went up to the Snyder’s & with Sarah. M & A went to town & called on Miss Duggan & walked around town till 6:15. After tea took Addy and Mina to the Beethoven Quintette Club. Which was superb. Mar 28th Sunday: Went to church in morning. Went to Sunday school played the hymn in s.s. Walked home with Mina Calcutt, Sophia, George & Emily. Walked over to church with Mina. [Mrs Granger Dow] sang in church to night and the Beethoven Quintette accompanied her on violins she sang anthem ‘I know my Redeemer liveth’. Mar 29th Monday: Took off the double windows. Went over to town with Mama drove her home with Sam’s horse. Went to vestry meeting. Worked in workshop after dinner after tea started to go down to Pecks but did not get any father than Snyder’s. Mar 30th Tuesday: Went over to town with Maggie.

came home with Mar 31st Wednesday: Stayed around house all morning till 3. Went up to the dam with George. After tea went up to Calcutt’s and took Addy over to the Duggan’s to a party. Mina sick. Enjoyed myself very much. Walked home with Addy, Sarah and Katie. Got home about 2. April 1: Went up to Calcutts for Maria & also to Snyders then to Calcutts again. After dinner went over to Court house till 5/ Went up to Calcutts. Went up to tea with Maggie & Sophia. Walked up to Snyders with Soph then took Mina & Addy up to Calcutts. Enjoyed myself very much. Temporary bridge taken away by ice. Nick slept here. April 2d: Took boat down to bridge. Went over all morning & afternoon. At 7:30 went up & took Mina & Addy up to party at Maria’s enjoyed myself very much. April 3d Saturday: Took Mina & Addy and Sophie B over to town in boat & walked around with them. Went up to dinner with Maggie stayed there all afternoon & slept & stayed to tea. Went to a party at Calcutts. Enjoyed myself very much. April 4th Sunday: Went to church. Went up to dinner with Maria to S. School for walk with Mina after to church walked home with Mina. April 5 Monday. To Town. Went to station to see Addy Calcutt, Katie Carnagie off for school. Went to tea at Calcutt’s. April 6 Tuesday: Went to town called to see Mr. Belcher but was not in. After dinner went to town worked in workshop. Drove Amelia over town & back. After tea some of Helen’s & Emily’s [friend] here. April 7th Wednesday: Walked over to town with Sophia B. & Mina C. Went to see Mr. Belcher & saw him. Went to tea at James. Mina C. Francis & Sarah S. there & George spending evening. When coming home, fire bell rang & our Factory on pond was burnt down. Worked hard. Loss about $4000. George got horses & drew hose cart & Engine home. I was first at the fire. April 8th Thursday: Tom Peebles came up from fire & slept here. Went over to town. Went to a party at Rev. Mr. Clementi’s. Sophia Went. Walked home with Miss Burritt. Eddie came home from school. April 9th Friday: Went up to Maggie’s Sophia & Mag came down & we went through the Mill & up to the dam. After tea spent the evening at old Dr. Burritt’s. Not bad. April 10th Sat. Stayed in house till 3. Went over to town for Papa. Went calling with Mag & Soph. on Morrow’s & Mrs. Kemp. April 11th Sunday: Went to church went to dinner & tea at Henry’s. Went to ss & after for walk with Nick B & Henry. Walked home with Mina C Sara S & Helen. April 12 Monday: Drew till 3 pm. Went over to town with Maria. Went up to Snyders after tea then Sophia B Eddie & Nick George & I Slept downstairs beside Sophia. Sophia had sore leg has blisters on it for some days. April 13th: To own in morn. Drew. Went down to Pecks’s to spend evening. Francis & Eddie there. April 14th Wed.: Went over to town. Then drew all day. Went up to Weller’s very good. Wked with Mina C. April 15th Thursday: Went over to town with Soph B. Went to see Mr. Belcher. After dinner went over to town with Mina Cal & Francis. After tea studdied till 10:30. Raining. April 16 Friday: Nasty day snowing &c. Got hurt by piece of iron flying up striking me while at work down at the race. Went over town with Maria & walked around town with her. In the evening the annual Meeting of P. Cricket Club was held at Huffman House was elected Sec. & Treas. Went up to a party at the Blyth Mills given by the Hilliards. Enjoyed myself very much. George drove. Frances, Sarah, Sophia Burnett & Mina Calcutt up & back. Came back with them. April 17th Saturday: Went over to town in morn. In afternoon went to call on Rev. Clementi was not in. Went shoping with Maria. After tea went up to dam with George & tried to get up some stop logs. April 18 Sunday: Went to church morn & night. Went to dinner at James & tea at Marias after c in night walked up to James with Sophia B. April 19 Mond.: Worked in workshop all morning. Went to town after dinner with Lloyd. After tea worked at workshop till 9. Went over to Miss Connal’s for Mina Calcutt brought her home. Stayed up there all night as Mr. & Mrs. Calcutt were in Lindsay._._._._._._._._._._. May 15th Saturday: Went over to office from 9:30 till 5. Went over to c. field & played till 6:30. Went up to Calcutt’s. Charlie Rogers died at 3 o’clock to-day. May 16th Sunday: Went to early service & church in morning & evening. Walked home with M from church in morning & went for walk after Sunday school with M. & Lilly Weller. Walked up with Sarah from church in evening. M not there. May 17th Monday: Went to office from 10 till 5. Went for Doctor for Mama. Mama has not been well for this last two or three days. Went up to cricket field for while but it rained a little so we stopped after tea M & Sarah Snyder went riding was going with them but could not get a horse. Went to cricket ground. Drove [up] with M. Sarah & Lilly Weller. After tea went over to town went to Railway meeting till 10. Day for securing tenders for bridge. Farquharson. Lloyd. Weir. got in PH at 10. Stayed at St. Lawrence Hotel. George H. & I roomed together. June 8th: Went up to cricket ground. [Rackhams] & Hammonds did not get there till about 11. Played a match with Port Hope & M had hard luck & we got beaten by 32 Runs after tea went up to school with Geo Hatton till 9:45. Logan & Hooker came down to the Hotel with us till 11. Went down to the warf with G.H. & [Perrane] then went up to school. June 9th Wednesday: Ordered some lunch for Whitby match which we played and won by 3 runs. After tea at 7:30 we started for home. I was told that Miss Sutherland was [drown] with George Roger. We had to go around to Dixon’s dam. Raining hard got home at 1. Bridge went away for 2d time. June 10th Thursday: Got up at 5 & George & Eddie & I went down to locks & graphed for body from 6 till 8. Came back for breakfast then went down again & not get home till 6:30. Went up to see M. went down to Peck’s with her. June 11th Friday: Went down to locks with Eddie at 10 till 3. Went over to town till 6. Went up to Maggie’s till 10:30 with Eddie. June 12th Saturday: Went to town to see after the harness. At 3 went over to town had a cricket meeting at Huffman House about celebration for 1st July. After went around with C. Wallis to make some arrangements after tea. Went up to see M & Aunt Sophia came up. June 13th Sunday: Went to church with Maria & Helen across the ferry & came over Dixon’s dam. Went to dinner at Maria’s. Went to tea up to Maggie’s. Went to C. with M over the ferry & walked down to the locks after & Miss Snyder overtook us & drove us home. June 14th: Went to Camp at Cobourg. Went down on boat & went in on train. George was acting adjutant Eddie Private, I orderly Room Clerk. Had very fine weather during camp except the day before we came home. M Minnie & Sussie were in our tent with Jonny Roberts & I got them something to eat & drove Minnie & Sussie home. Charlie McCallum drove M home. June 25th: Bumed around all morning. The rest of volunteers went home. Went to dinner at N American took Mary for a drive in the afternoon. Called on Mrs. K Calcutt Went to tea at Burnett’s after tea went up to K Calcutt’s till 10:30. After tea went down to Boat & took the tickets for our excursion (Moonlight) which went off very well big crowd there. x July 30th Friday: Awfully tired. After tea went over to Club Boat house as W. Nesbitt. Harry Hall George & I intend rowing a four oar at the regatta. [] After wrote some invitations to an excursion on the day week. Aug 20th Friday ‘Civic Holiday’: Played cricket all day a scratch match. After tea went up for M & Addy to go over to the Shaw’s. M could not go walked over to the Shaw’s with Addy & spent the evening, rather slow. Thom Hay walked over with me & met Chaffy who walked home with Addy. Aug 21st Saturday: Went down to river to a pic-nic given by the Winslow’s of Millbrook whom we met at [Hailse] bridge went down to Rice Lake rained a little. Enjoyed myself very much. Aug 22d Sunday: Went to C. & to S.S. went down to Boat house before S.S. Went to C after went up to see M as she is not well came home at 8:45. Went to Boat House went over rowing with T & A Belcher. W Nesbitt & George in ‘four oared’ went up to C’s for while. M sick. Aug 24th Tuesday: Worked at cricket field all morning. Found Telegraph after dinner. Went Rowing from 6 till 7:30. Went down to locks to help Mr. Calcutt lock through a scow for the excursion he was not there. Went up to C’s for while. M better. Aug 25th: Went over to town [then] worked at Cricket shed all day. Went for little drive with M & Addy. After tea went over to town with Lloyd to see some of the eleven. Went up. for Aunt Sophia Stayed around house all afternoon. After tea Sept 19th: We all stayed in house all day in Mother’s room as we expected to see the last of our dear Mother every moment however she lingered on all day perfectly unconscious moaning all day it was something awful to hear her poor creature, none of us went to bed. It is written in much larger print.] Monday September 20th 1875: Our dear mother died at 3:15 a.m. ‘Blessed are they that die in the Lord’. Mrs. Tobin & Mrs. Buck laid poor Mama out. George & Eddie & I carried her into the parlor on a wide plank when laid out. Put crape on the shop & Hall doors & laid down till 11. Went up to Maggie stayed to dinner went over to town with some letters for aunt Sophia. Read till 6. Stayed in house. There was an alarm of fire went over to bridge but came back as I could not see any thing wrote in Diary for this last week. A great many people came in to see the last of our dear old mother. Sept 21st Tuesday: Drove Maria over to town drove Dick Birdsall out in the country went to train to meet Aunt Caroline. After dinner drove Maria over to town & went over again myself drove M & Addy C. over home. Mama’s funeral took place at three o’clock a very large one. Mr. Calcutt, Peck, Stevenson, Dr. Burnham, Snyder, Menz ies, were Pall-bearers. It went to church & had a service at the grave. Papa & James drove in our phaeton & George & I & Archie in James & the rest in Cabs behind. We got home about 5. A very fine day. After tea went up to James & stayed till 10. Wked up with Mary. Went over to C. at 10 till 12:30 & in afternoon. Did not go in for anything in morning but kicking foot ball. In afternoon went in for hurdle race against Baily & American. The hurdles were too high & we all knocked them down but Baily got in first & won. I then ran in the 100 yds & won it in two straight heats prize gold medal. Went in for ¼ against American & Mullins. Was ahead all the way around till about 75 yds. From winning post & I stepped in a hole & fell down & hit my shoulder. Mullins then won the race. After went to Molson Hall where prizes were presented. W. Maclennan came over to my room with me. after tea went down to Dennistoun’s room & we had an oyster supper. got home at 10:45. Nov. 3rd Wednesday. Went to C. as usual. Met W.A.M. going to dinner. Came home at 5. After played on violin with Mary G. Studdied till 11:30. Nov. 4th Went to C. as usual. Went to C as usual. Came home at 4. Studied till 12:20. Dec. 10th Friday Went to a lecture on Hydrostatics. Lectures cease today. Studied all afternoon. Went down town at 5 for a walk. Walked home with Miss White & a Mrs. Power. Got home at 10:30. Studied till 12:45. Dec. 11th Saturday. Studied till 4. Wrote a letter. Went down town till 6. Studied till 11. Received a telegram from George saying he would be down here tomorrow. Dec. 12th Sunday. Went down to train to meet George. He arrived down at 9. Came up here. Went to St. George’s after dinner at 4 went down to Cote St. Paul to the Scott’s. Got home at 10:45. Dec. 13th Monday. Went to C till 6. Examinations commenced. Exam in Mechanics Hydrostatics in morning. Experimental Physics in afternoon. Studied till 12. Dec. 14th Tuesday. Went over & took George over to College. Came home. Studied till 12:10. Dec. 15th Wednesday. Went to C all day. Exam in Mathematics. Studied till 11. Dec. 16th Thursday. Went to C till 5. Studied till 6. George took Mrs. Grant & Mary for a drive. Mr. & Mrs. Grant went out to tea. George & I went to opera & after George started for home on night train. Willie Maclennan was down to see him off & we walked up together to St. Catherine. Did not study as I don’t feel very well. Dec. 17th Friday. Studied till 4. Went for a walk till 6:30. After tea studied from 7:30 till 11:30. Dec. 18th Saturday. Studied all morning. Went to C. Examination in Construction. Came home at 4:30. Studied till 12. Dec 19th Sunday. Went to St. Martin’s with Mary Grant. Read all afternoon. Went to St. Martin’s in evening with Mrs. Grant & Mary. Very cold. Dec. 20th Monday. Went to College. Exam in Zoology. Studied all afternoon till 12. Willie Maclennan & Dennistoun came up to see me. Froze both my ears this morning. Coldest day we have had. Dec. 21st Tuesday. Went to C at 12 to a meeting of skating committee and to an examination in German in afternoon. After went down town met W. Spence. After tea started for home at 9 o’clock. Dec. 22nd Wednesday. Got in Port Hope about 9. Went up to see Mrs. Ward & [W?] Started for home at 10:10. Left my trunk in P.H. After dinner went up to Jame’s saw Sophia B. Maggie had a young daughter yesterday & Mrs. MD. McDougall a young son. Went up to the C’s after tea. Went up again to charades. Church [St----ts] burnt down. Dec. 23rd Thursday. Went over to town to station to see about my trunk. It came up on noon train. Went up to C for while. After dinner went over to town with M. Left her over in town. Went to & looked at Church till 6. Went up to C’s after tea to charades. Dec. 24th Friday. Worked up at the C’s all morning. Went to Miss Lucy Dudman’s funeral with Mr. Calcutt. An awful day. Snowed & blew. Before & after tea went over to town to buy some presents. Went up to C’s. Raining hard. Dec. 25th Saturday. Christmas Day Went to church. Stayed to communion. Aunt Caroline, Charlotte, John, Maria, Edith, Sam, Amelia, Albert, Papa, George, Eddie, Harriett, Helen, Emily, Alfred, Archie & myself sat down to dinner. Rain last night took all the snow off. After dinner worked up at Mrs. Calcutt’s at their Xmas tree till tea.Went up to James for key of store, after tea. Went up to the C’s. All of us went up & Sophia & Marie Burnett. Had charades etc. Stayed to supper after rest had gone. Mrs. Calcutt gave me a very nice writing case and Mina gave me a beautiful pair of slippers. Got home at 11:15. Amelia & Maria & their babies stayed here last night & Amelia & her baby is here tonight. Christmas was rather dull as it was the first we ever spent without dear old mother. Sunday. Dec. 26th Went to church & to S. School walked home with M. & went up there to tea. Went to church. Raining hard so none of them went. After church went up to James with George & Emily for while. Monday. Dec. 27th Went up to Mrs. Calcutt’s to fix her curtains. Went up to Maria’s. Went over to town. Went skating at 4 with M. & Minnie Perry till 6 after tea. Dec. 28th Tuesday. Wrote a letter. Went over to town. Went up to soup kitchen. Went in to James’ for while after dinner at 3. Went skating with M after tea. Dec. 29th Wednesday. Went for a little skate on the pond. Got the mare out, went over to town. Drove Sophia Burnett over after dinner. Went over for the Dr. as Papa did not feel very well. Took M for a drive till 6. Went up with Mary B. & stayed to tea. After went up to Mrs. Calcutt’s with Mary, Sophia & Eddie. Got home at 11. Dec. 30th Thursday. Worked down at the workshop at some picture frames. Went up to Mrs. C to get Add’s [----] to mend it after tea. Went X was going down to Peck’s with Add but it was such a mean night we did not go. Maria, John & Charlotte at tea. Miserable day. Thawing. Rec’d Report of result of Exams & found I had passed. Dec. 30th [sic] Friday. Last day of old 1875. Worked in workshop till 4. Went over to town. Bummed around. Goerge Hatton drove me home. Went up to James. Saw Maggie for the 1st time. Large party at the Scotts. Went up to see Mina and Addy dressed. Stayed up there till 10:15. No snow at all on the ground. Streets all mud. Thermometer was about 57° or 58° all day. Raining. Does not seem like New Years at all.
