1917 Letter 5

[1917]

Dear Mother –

Have had cards from Eric up to the 15th. So he was safe through the worst of the Vimy Ridge show. Am enclosing a letter though it doesn’t give much news.

The Vimy casualties are arriving here – wonderfully quick time. The men are full of praise for the management of the whole thing and say it went off without a hitch.

To-day is the first really spring like day we’ve had – and it is lovely.

Yesterday Andy and I went over to Clarence House in the ambulance – a great run – through Richmond Park and up Richmond Hill from which the view of the Thames is one of the most famous in England. The country here is absolutely perfect even now and what it must be in the summer! I can’t imagine any place more lovely –

I had a card from Don to-night and he expected to leave this morning – but of course he may be disappointed again.

I am feeling better every day and am as keen as ever now – I bought a new dress the other day – brown crepe de chine with collar and cuffs of primrose georgette crepe. It is a colour I’ve never worn and it suits me better than anything. It cost me £3-10 –

Can you imagine it? I think the shops out here are wonderfully cheap and good.

Well I must stop – will write again to-morrow –

Lovingly –

Helen.
