1917 Letter 4
[1917]
Dearest Mother,
A letter came to-day from you. I’m so glad the description of Buckingham pleased you. I got a very flowery letter from Mrs. Charlie Plant as Sec of the I.O.D.E. – Decent of her, but awfully hard to answer, when I know it will appear in the Star.
I am feeling fine these days as the weather is improving. Last week Andy expected to be moved and the thought of being in charge here with a bunch that I came over with and all hard to manage at any time made me feel quite weak.
However Andy isn’t going and it’s all serene again. Why do "positions" occupy so little space in our minds Mother? None of us is keen for responsibility and charge jobs.
I went to see a chest specialist on Friday and I’m O.K, not a thing wrong. I knew I might be moved and thought it would be a good plan to see a really good man and know just how I was.
Andy got me an address from a friend of hers who knows all the big men and came with me. He is Dr. [Langmead] and lives in Queen Anne St.
I liked him very much and am glad to know some one to whom I could go again. He said my lungs were in perfect condition and that I could go to France or anywhere.
It is a relief to me for I have had colds all winter and was getting rather blue. Now I am settled and will be a different person. I could have had a medical board but I thought I would rather have a good outside opinion.
Now you mustn’t worry and think I’ve been at death’s door – for I haven’t, and now my cold is quite gone and I feel as well as ever.
I haven’t heard from Don for a few days and think he may have gone.
I must stop now
Lovingly
Helen
