Hans Knoll (1914-1955)
Florence Knoll (1917 - )
Knoll International was founded in 1938 by Hans Knoll, and along with Herman Miller, was one of the foremost design-led furniture manufacturers in the United States. Florence Knoll attended Cranbrook Academy along with Charles Eames, Eero Saarinen, and Harry Bertoia, and together with Hans, formed Knoll Associates in 1946. Hans was killed in a car crash in 1955 and Florence assumed presidency of the company until 1960.
Knoll International handled designs by Bertoia and Saarinen. It made and sold flawless European design in the U.S. and was influential in introducing Americans to Danish design. Knoll was largely responsible for the international reputations of furniture design by Marcel Breuer and Mies van der Rohe.
