[n.d.]

Dear Mother –

Nothing much has happened this week, except a big concert at Drury Lane for the French Red Cross, that we went to with Miss De Stalgie.

I am enclosing the programme – so you can see all about it.

Clara [Butt] sang and was wonderfully received & in fact I’ve never seen such an enthusiastic audience over here.

She is a magnificent woman – six feet at least and a perfectly glorious voice. She had a black and gold dress and looked very well indeed.

The acts from the opera were good too especially Aida.

There were lots of prominent people and very many French.

Asquith came in late and was received with marked coldness while all the others were well cheered. He isn’t very popular over here after the Dardanelles and Mesopotamia fiascoes. I was very glad to have seen Mrs. Asquith. She looks exactly like her picture and probably has the serpent’s tongue – at any rate it never ceased.

Lloyd George was there too and Jellicoe and heaps more we didn’t know.

Beyond that little outing I haven’t been farther than Putney for days – been trying to save my money for leave – but prices now are about double what they were and a pound seems to go no farther than a dollar used to at home. Mufti costs a lot to keep up too.

Had cards from the boys but no letters. Eric still hopes to come over soon to take out a commission but one never counts on Eric, I’ll wait till I see him.

Poor old Don has been doing his own bit of scrapping lately but in just what part of the line I do not know.

A boat goes to-morrow which I must try to catch with this. So Good-by dear. I’ll write more to-morrow – Lovingly

Helen
