1915 Letter 10
Folkstone
March 18, [1915]
Dear Mother,
Just a line before the boat leaves. We were wakened at 5 am. had breakfast at 6:00 and left about 6:15. It seemed very early as the train doesn't leave Paddington till 8:30. However it took some time to arrange our baggage etc.
We had a very pleasant trip down and lots of fun. Four of us have our chairs together and I think we'll have a very pleasant voyage. We are only on the boat a couple of hours.
This is a regular clean up. Miss Godard, Miss Boyd & Miss Pierce went to Cliveden yesterday at an hour's notice. Miss Boulter and nine others went to Netheravon at six and nineteen of the First Contingent from down there came up to go over with us. They are wild at the idea of our going over with them instead of staying in England a while. I'm afraid there are a few shocks coming to them.
Am feeling fine and hope to remain so. Phoned George last night but he had a lecture and couldn't come up.
My photos are fine and I am having some sent on at once to you.
The bunch is scrapping over a couple of disputed pennies. We changed most of our money into French and now we have to watch the few remaining pennies. I must hunt a stamp so will close - Pardon the writing I am using my lap for a desk. It is a dull day but not raining. London was buried under a pall of smoke and the air was positively yellow. Good-bye now - Mother darling - We are all in good spirits and aren't a bit nervous. Love to Papa and Don when you write.
Yours always,
Helen
